LSLT: Neha Joshi (ECE)

Time:
Thursday, May 12, 2022 - 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM
Location:
Language Science Center and Zoom

Although we will continue to offer a Zoom option for LSLT for now, we strongly encourage you to attend in person! The talk is only part of the point of LSLT: it's a good opportunity to meet and chat with students and faculty in other departments. And there's lunch!

Cortical Processing during Auditory Attention: Arithmetic and Simple Sentences

Abstract: The neural basis of arithmetic and language processing may rely on distinct cortical networks, which must also be disentangled from mechanisms underlying the sensory modality of presentation. Here, we use spoken equations and sentences to investigate neural processing of arithmetic compared to general simple language processing in an attention-modulated cocktail party paradigm. Our results indicate that cortical networks underlying arithmetic and language processing are well segregated during a competing speaker paradigm, and that these neural responses are linked to comprehension or correct calculations.
