Piecemeal or wholesale transfer? The effects of lexical properties in L3 transfer

Abstract: This study explores the role of lexical constraints on the transfer of the Dative Alternation (DA) to further understand the transfer of linguistic properties and their rules to an L3. We used L1 Dutch-L2 English speakers to observe whether the acceptance of the DA in Spanish is modulated by the lexical constraints of Dutch and English verbs. The results suggest that transfer could go beyond linguistic features and apply to lexical restrictions.
