LSLT: Katie Glanbock (TLPL)

Time:
Thursday, May 05, 2022 - 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM
Location:
Language Science Center and Zoom

Although we will continue to offer a Zoom option for LSLT for now, we strongly encourage you to attend in person! The talk is only part of the point of LSLT: it's a good opportunity to meet and chat with students and faculty in other departments. And there's lunch!

“In your country”: Culturally and linguistically diverse pre-service teachers’ and students’ discursive co-construction of (trans-)national identity

Abstract: In this study, we conduct discourse analysis to examine how culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) pre-service teachers and high school students position themselves in relation to national affiliation throughout their interactions. We draw on sociocultural theory and poststructural conceptualizations of identity to explore how participants invoke or subvert categories tied to national affiliation, and examine how this shapes the ways in which they could participate in conversations about culture.
