Riding the LPM Wave: The Future of Academic Research in the Era of Large Pre-trained Models

Abstract: There has been a rapid growth in general-purpose generative models that have revolutionized the fields of natural language processing, computer vision, and machine learning in general. The impressive performance of these models has come at a cost—they require significant data, compute, and storage—creating a barrier to entry, especially for smaller groups. The hype around LPMs has also created a sense of panic in the research community, about how they can stay up to date and contribute to progress. Despite these challenges, academia has a unique opportunity to contribute to LPM-based research due to the breadth of expertise at academic institutions, who can bring different perspectives to the development and use of generative models, and can collaborate to overcome the challenges involved. This workshop brings together researchers, across disciplines, to discuss the future of NLP/Vision/HCI/Robotics research in academia, and will provide a forum to exchange ideas, share experiences, and form collaborations.

The Initiative for Values-Centered Artificial Intelligence is hosting a workshop on “Riding the LPM Wave: The Future of Academic Research in the Era of Large Pre-trained Models” on Friday, November 3rd. The workshop aims to bring together researchers, across disciplines, to discuss the future of NLP/Vision/HCI/Robotics research in academia in the era of large pre-trained models (LPMs). The workshop will feature a keynote talk and panel, followed by several breakout sessions to brainstorm research projects in the space of LPMs. The full schedule is available on the workshop website. The workshop will be held in Gannon Auditorium (IRB 0318) in the Iribe building from 1:00 PM PM to 5:00 PM, followed by a social at The Hall CP
