Langscape

LangscapeLangscape is a geographical information system (GIS) which maps the locations of around 6,400 languages worldwide. The interactive map links to detailed information about each language, integrating information from many different data resources. This includes information about demographics, language families, sound systems, bibliographies and expertise, plus sound recordings and texts.

Our goal is to serve users in research, education, government and beyond, and to raise public awareness and understanding of language diversity.

Langscape is coordinated by the Maryland Language Science Center, but reflects contributions from many individuals and organizations: UMD’s Center for Advanced Study of Language as well as the Rosetta Project, PHOIBLE Online, Global Recordings Network, and others.

Langscape as it is right now is just the beginning: we are continuing to add new data and developing new functionality for the site.
