Title: It's Not What You Say, It's How You Say It: Modeling Linguistic Framing in Politics and Mental Health

Abstract: "Framing effects" refer to the way that communication about a topic can “select some aspects of a perceived reality and make them more salient in a communicating text'' (Chong and Druckman, 2007). This is a familiar phenomenon in political communications, where framing is used tactically to influence our perceptions and opinions. (Is the policy debate about 'gun control' or 'gun safety'? 'Gay marriage' or 'marriage equality'?) For the past several years, I've been working on computational models designed to discover patterns of framing in political contexts, and I've also been exploring a novel application of such models in the mental health domain, where the way people frame their thoughts can serve as an important window into their personality, mood, and mental status. This talk will give an overview of the work so far and where it's headed, in a way that's friendly regardless of whether or not you're already familiar with computational methods.
