Language Science Lunch Talk: Marine Carpuat (CS)
Word Sense Disambiguation Improves Statistical Machine Translation
Abstract: "In this talk I have been asked to reflect on the paper that was the cornerstone of my dissertation "Word Sense Disambiguation Improves Statistical Machine Translation", published at the conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing in 2007. Come for the vintage 4:3 slides straight from my PhD defense, stay for stories about how I approached research as a PhD student when large language models took over the field of machine translation around 2005, and how that influences what I am doing now that large language models are taking over seemingly everything."
Talks begin at 12:30 PM, with lunch served at 12:15 PM. Vegetarian options available. Let us know if you have other dietary restrictions.
