Title: Reading Comprehension Outcomes among Individuals with Mild Intellectual Disabilities

Abstract: Many individuals with mild intellectual disabilities (ID) struggle with reading comprehension, which could hinder access to future educational and vocational opportunities. While many may underestimate the ability that individuals with mild ID have to improve their reading comprehension, studies has been conducted to analyze the effects of interventions on the reading comprehension of persons with mild ID. In this talk, I will present a synthesis of studies that target reading comprehension among individuals with mild ID in grades 4 through 12 and postsecondary programs. Eight group-design studies and four single-case research design studies published between January 2001 and May 2017 were synthesized. Findings from the 12 studies revealed that the effects of interventions on reading comprehension vary based on intervention type, with single-component interventions typically resulting in better reading comprehension outcomes than multicomponent interventions. Practical implications and recommendations for future research will be discussed as well.
