Communication in Concussion

Abstract: Despite its prevalence, the effect of concussion, the mildest form of brain injury, on communication remains incompletely understood. Although many individuals appear to recover function entirely, others experience enduring deficits, particularly when facing more complex cognitive and linguistic demands that arise in everyday life. Here, I will define the population of those with concussion and summarize our findings from recent investigations into the contribution of key individual differences to the varied profiles of deficits that occur following these mild injuries. Moreover, I will explain how ongoing research into language deficits can better address both immutable and trait-like therapeutically manipulable individual differences, not just in those with concussion, but across profiles of those we treat as speech language pathologists.
