Position
The MILE Assistant Research Scientist takes on a leading role in ensuring the success of research activities and reaching milestones while collaborating with a diverse group of interdisciplinary language and literacy researchers, including other UMD faculty, research scientists (e.g., professional track faculty), postdoctoral associates, and students. This includes developing specific MILE research grants (dependent on expertise and grants awarded to members of the MILE research subcommittee) and contributing to MILE proposals, publications, and presentations. Other activities may include representing MILE research at internal meetings (e.g., MILE executive meetings with other Pillars), external meetings, and conferences to forge new research-practice partnerships with local school districts, libraries, and community organizations.

The Assistant Research Scientist The position provides opportunities for professional development concerning various methodologies, research techniques and approaches, and engagement with populations of learners and practitioners inside and outside of the PK-12 educational system. This is a 12-month, full-time position for one year, and renewable for up to two years. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with MILE research subcommittee members and executive team members to create research activities to further the mission of MILE.
  • Collaborate on (and lead collaboration of) grant proposals.
  • Oversee research grant project activities.
  • Coordinate recruitment and other research activities with local school district partners.
  • Oversee data management and ensure the confidentiality of data.
  • Assist with data analysis.
  • Prepare materials for team meetings.
  • Facilitate publications and presentations related to MILE research.

About MILE
MILE is an interdisciplinary initiative recently funded by the University of Maryland in partnership with Morgan State University. MILE aims to harness research-to-practice partnerships in education, speech and language pathology, library sciences, policy, and community stakeholder outreach. These efforts are aimed at driving integrative research about literacy broadly defined, both translational and basic, that is contextualized to marginalized communities across race, culture, ethnicity, and language, as well as neurodiverse populations. MILE includes 4 Pillars (Research, Education, Professional Development, and Community and Policy Outreach) built around our key stakeholder groups: scholars, undergraduate/graduate students, literacy professionals, communities/families, and policymakers.

Qualifications
Minimum requirements include a Ph.D. in a language and literacy-related field or applied research experience in language or literacy. Applicants must have a strong interest in translational research, highly effective oral and written communication skills, excellent quantitative and/or mixed-methods research skills, and excellent project management skills. Experience with translational research is preferred.
