Location:

TitleBirdsong from a bird's eye and a human's eye view

AbstractVocal learning birds are popular models for studying the neurobiology of human language, but what does birdsong actually sound like to the birds and how do their perceptual abilities compare to ours? In this talk, I present the results of recent experiments testing the abilities of songbirds and parrots to hear changes in sequences and syllables of birdsong, showing species differences among birds and between birds and humans. I also raise the possibility that we may be underestimating the complexity of structure in birdsong and propose several avenues for future research.
