NACS Seminar: Dr. Yaoda Xu (Yale)
Understanding visual representations in human occipito-temporal and posterior parietal cortices and convolutional neural networks
Abstract: In recent studies we show that non-spatial visual information, including the content of visual working memory, may be directly represented in the human posterior parietal cortex (PPC). In this talk, I will compare visual representaions in the human PPC with those in the human occipito-temporal cortex and describe how together they provide us with both a stable representation of our visual environment and allow us to interact with the external world flexibly and efficiently. Using methods developed in neuroscience, I will also examine the nature of visual representations in convolution neural networks trained to perform object recognition.
Bio: Dr. Yaoda Xu is a Senior Research Scientist at Yale University.
The NACS Seminar Series bring NACS faculty and students together on a weekly basis. The speakers are world-class neuroscientists and cognitive scientists who are working at the cutting edge of their discipline. Seminars are held on Fridays from 10:15 AM to 11:30 AM in room 1103 in the Bioscience Research Building. Titles will be posted as they become available. For additional information, please contact Claire Morse at cmorse@umd.edu. NACS seminars are not recorded.
