English Learners’ Science Text Comprehension: Benefits of Cross Language Instruction
This study explored the effectiveness of a short-term reading intervention on comprehension and engagement in primary English Learners (ELs). Rising 2nd and 3rd grade ELs, identified as "at-risk" received explicit comprehension strategy instruction and supports for reading engagement in English and Spanish using a conceptual science theme. Preliminary data indicate that students increased their cognitive and affective engagement across languages.
