Exploring the Interface of Explicit and Implicit Second-Language Knowledge: Bridging Theory, Methodology, and Pedagogy

Abstract: A central issue in second language acquisition is understanding how second language (L2) knowledge types (i.e., explicit and implicit) and L2 processing (i.e., form-focused and meaning-focused) relate. Do form-focused processing and explicit knowledge facilitate the development of implicit knowledge? This question is known as the interface issue, which has been the object of extensive theorization. In this presentation, I will present findings of several projects that explored (1) the validity of L2 knowledge measures and (2) the longitudinal association between L2 knowledge and processing types. I will conclude this presentation by discussing the theoretical, methodological, and pedagogical implications and future directions of my work.

Bio: Kathy Kim is a clinical assistant professor and the director of the TESOL Ed.M. program in the Wheelock College of Education and Human Development at Boston University. Kathy is a pedagogy-focused psycholinguist with expertise in second language acquisition and its applications to teaching. In her Boston University Second Language Acquisition lab, Kathy and her team conduct research on teaching strategies and conditions that impact L2 learners’ development of different types of knowledge (e.g., explicit, implicit). She earned her Ph.D. in Second Language Studies and Cognitive Science at Michigan State University.
