The aging and hearing impaired brain: Envelope tracking across the lifespan in normal hearing and hearing impaired listeners

Abstract: When we grow older, understanding speech in noise becomes more challenging. To investigate the related neural changes, we measured envelope tracking while speech understanding was behaviorally measured. To disentangle age and hearing loss, two populations across the lifespan, one with normal hearing and one with sensorineural hearing loss, were recruited. We found that age affects envelope tracking non-linearly with an increase from 50 years on. This may suggest that older adults need more resources to perform similar as their younger counterparts. Hearing loss, acquired at young or older age, seems to result in an additional increase of envelope tracking.
