Elections

Every spring, the Language Science Center holds elections for the Steering Committee and the Graduate Student Board. Two Steering Committee members and two Graduate Student Board members are elected per year. Current Steering Committee and Graduate Student Board members are listed here.

In order to run or vote in elections, participants must be official members of the LSC. If you are not yet a member, you can easily join here!

2024-2025 Elections

Nominations and voting for the 2024-2025 Steering Committee and Graduate Student Board have closed. 

The Steering Committee

The Steering Committee is comprised of:

  • The LSC Director, who also serves as Chair of the committee
  • Six tenure track or professional track faculty members, elected for staggered three-year terms
  • Two members of the Graduate Student Board, in their second year of service
  • Up to four additional members appointed by the Director to represent specific units, programs, or constituencies

A department or unit may have a maximum of two elected Steering Committee members. We invite any tenure track or professional track faculty members to nominate themselves for a position on the committee!

The Steering Committee's mission and goals include:

  • Developing, guiding, and executing the LSC’s strategy in research, education, partnerships, and fundraising
  • Drafting yearly objectives and reviewing progress
  • Advising on specific initiatives as they arise
  • Evaluating and implementing feedback from advisory boards
  • Building the language science community, including encouraging, facilitating, and inspiring participation from faculty and students
  • Providing area-specific expertise to guide the LSC’s initiatives
  • Approving special committees and Associate Director appointments made by the Director

The Steering Committee typically meets once per month.

Graduate Student Board

The Graduate Student Board is comprised of four graduate students, elected by their fellow graduate students for staggered two-year terms. At least three departments must be represented on the Board at all times. We invite any graduate students to nominate themselves!

Graduate Student Board's mission and goals include:

  • Help identify and communicate priorities and concerns of graduate students in the language science community
  • Communicate formally and informally with students and committees, and meet about once per month to discuss the needs and interests of the broader student community
  • Work directly with the LSC management team to plan activities and initiatives to serve graduate students.
  • Two of the four board members will serve as members of the Steering Committee and play a direct role in decisions about LSC priorities, activities, and budget.

The Graduate Student Board typically meets once every 1-2 months.
