Field Station

The Maryland Language Science Center's Guatemala Field Station is proud to sponsor FAMLi 5 (the 5th conference on Form and Analysis in Mayan Linguistics), which will take place Aug. 10-11, 2018 in Antigua, Guatemala at Cooperación Española.

The first group of language scientists from UMD has arrived in Guatemala for a month of Mayan language study and research.  Throughout June, they will be taking intensive classes in Kaqchikel, staying with Kaqchikel-speaking host families, working on language research projects and observing the work of healthcare non-profit Wuqu’ Kawoq / Maya Health Alliance.

The Maryland Language Science Center has established a research field station near the beautiful Lake Atitlán in the western highlands of Guatemala. This is the first of several planned international field stations, which will support multi-disciplinary research involving local communities and languages.
