For Members

So, you've joined the LSC. Now what? Here is a handy summary of member resources, benefits, and more. Some resources are available to both faculty and students, with some overlapping sections for user convenience.

Space Use and Swipe Access

You can use the space anytime for work, meetings, etc. Larger shared areas, an outreach room with a green screen, and the sensory room (by reservation at shevaun@umd.edu) are available.

All center members have swipe access. Upon the delivery of each member's welcome email, the LSC will begin processing their 24/7 swipe access to the center. This includes the external building doors, the main hub (HJP-2130), LSC classrooms (HJP-2123 & 2124), and the second-floor kitchen (HJP 2105).

Our spaces are configured for effective hybrid meetings. We have conference microphones, web cameras, a spare laptop, portable PA system, and every adapter known to man.

Priority Reservations

Members have priority when reserving any LSC spaces for larger events or meetings visa our Space Request Form. We also share additional spaces in HJ Patterson (larger classrooms, “Global Crossroads” atrium), and can discuss if that could meet your needs.

To use an office or testing/experiment space on an extended basis, contact Caitlin Eaves (ceaves@umd.edu).

Poster and Standard Printing

Free color poster printing is available in the center (back of the Hub). Please sign the log when using. Standard black and white printing is also available, with connection instructions on the printer table.

General Online Resources

Website Profile

We want your profile on our website! Many ARHU members already have profiles created and listed on ARHU websites. If you're not in ARHU or haven't created a profile within ARHU, a profile has been created for you.

It will only display your name and won't include a picture or details until you update it.

Editing Profiles

To access your profile, scroll to the bottom of our homepage, click “log in” and log in using your UID. Once logged in, click "edit" on your profile to update your picture and information. Don't forget to list your unit affiliation!

LSC Server

The LSC hosts a server that is configured for efficient collection of large-scale data, e.g., speech recordings, from online experiments. Please contact Colin Phillips (colin@umd.edu) for more information.

Mailing Lists & Newsletter

Members can use LSC mailing lists to reach UMD language science faculty or students. These emails go to a lot of people, so please make sure your message is broadly relevant!

Emails to these lists are moderated, so we’ll let you know if your message isn’t appropriate for the whole list, and suggest other ways to reach people.

  • languagescience_faculty@umd.edu (Around 150 faculty–TTK, PTK, postdocs)
  • lsc-students@umd.edu (Around 200 grad students, postdocs, postbacs)
  • Our weekly newsletter reaches 350-400 people. Contact Naia Lee-Hendricks (leehnai@umd.edu) regarding events that you’d like to publicize or news that you’d like people to hear about (promote upcoming talks, brag a little about a cool project you got funded, etc.!
  • Our alumni newsletter reaches around 150 people, and is still growing! This newsletter is sent out quarterly to LSC alumni and includes LSC updates, alumni spotlights, and exciting news!
