August 25, 2023
Maryland Language Science Center
We are very pleased to announce that Yi Ting Huang began her role as Director of the Maryland Language Science Center on July 1st, 2023. Yi Ting has a PhD in psychology from Harvard. She joined the University of Maryland faculty in 2011, where she is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences. She is an expert in language processing in adults and children. She has applied this expertise to multiple populations and societally important problems, including the relationship between language learning and poverty, cochlear implant users, and children learning language in the more isolated setting of a pandemic. Yi Ting’s leadership of diverse interdisciplinary projects makes her ideally suited to her new role. She is the PI of a Grand Challenges team project on “Fostering Inclusivity through Technology” (FIT) that aims to improve remote work experiences for neurodivergent individuals. During the pandemic she spearheaded the NSF-funded KidTalk project that studied young children’s pandemic language experience. Another NSF-supported project examines effects of socioeconomic status on language comprehension processes in children. She is also co-PI on the NSF-funded project that established the Language Science Station at Planet Word Museum. Yi Ting’s UMD collaborators include colleagues in Psychology, Linguistics, Human Development & Quantitative Methodology, Computer Science, the iSchool, as well as her home department. She was director of HESP’s PhD program for many years, and she has also been a campus leader in advocating for parent-friendly workplace policies. We are incredibly grateful to Yi Ting for taking on this new role in leading and supporting our Language Science Community.
