Language Science Lunch Talk - Bill Idsardi

Linguistics | Maryland Language Science Center Thursday, November 7, 2024 12:15 pm - 1:30 pm HJ Patterson, 2130

A SMPL logic of phonological concepts

Abstract: In this presentation I will continue to explore some surprising connections between formal representations for semantics and phonology (Pietroski 2018, Idsardi 2018). Both subregular phonology (Heinz 2018, Graf 2022) and SMPL concepts (Icard & Moss 2022) seem to require logical systems that lie above propositional logic but below full first order logic. That is, in the region of modal logics (van Benthem 2010) and restricted fragments of first order logic (Pratt-Hartmann 2023), such as the guarded two variable fragment, GF2
