Language Science Day 2019

The 10th annual Language Science Day is scheduled for Friday, September 20, 2019.

Language Science Day (LSD) is a signature annual event for Maryland's language science community, bringing together up to 200 students and faculty from across the university and affiliated centers. Participants get to know their fellow language scientists, exchange ideas, showcase their research, and discover opportunities for training or collaboration.

Breakout sessions

Language and literacy case studies: Be a language/literacy researcher for an hour! This session will present real case studies at the intersection of language, literacy, health, and education. We'll take advantage of interdisciplinary expertise to brainstorm research approaches to address these problems.

Government and industry partnerships: Brainstorm promising research opportunities with real-world applications. Collaborate to figure out how to use language science to tackle challenges in industry, education, health, disaster relief, and security.

Graduate training town hall: Help design the future of graduate training in language science at UMD. How should LSC programs for grad students change after the end of the NRT grant in 2021?

Sharing research

Language Science Day is a great opportunity to find out about research happening all over campus.

Any labs, research teams, and other collaborative groups are invited to present a poster about their work. (Please register here!) We welcome participation by faculty, grad students, undergraduates, and other research staff. You can team up with your labmates or collaborators to talk about the big picture, or zoom in on a particular study you're working on. Either way, remember that many of the people in attendance don't have the same training as you, so you have to explain your work in a way that will be comprehensible and interesting to a broad audience. (We would not recommend reusing a conference poster.)

Posters should be 36" x 48" (any orientation). If you don't have access to a poster printer in your department, you can print your poster at the LSC. Consider trying an edgy new format!
