Speaker: Bob Slevc

Title: Production and parsing of "real life" (errorful & implausible) syntax

Abstract: Many (probably most) psycholinguistic experiments focus on error-free "ideal delivery" utterances, however speakers often make errors and so comprehenders are often faced with disfluent and errorful sentences to parse. I will discuss some work on the production of syntactic errors and on the parsing of errorful sentences, drawing on evidence from both typical language users and from neuropsychological patients with syntactic and short-term memory deficits. Overall, I argue that studying production and parsing of erroneous syntax is a valuable way to better understand the cognitive systems underlying our abilities to produce and process complex structure.
