Syntactic vs. lexical effects in fMRI and MEG

Abstract: Contrasts between sentence and list stimuli routinely yield apparent effects of syntactic structure in fMRI. Recent work in MEG has suggested an effect specifically of syntactic prediction. However in a MEG design that removes lexical predictability we find no effects of structure, predictive or otherwise. I will describe this finding, and then consider how well a lexical explanation for what might appear to be structure effects can account for previous work across various methods.
