LangSci Lunch Talk: Allyson Ettinger (LING)

Time:
Thursday, September 21, 2017 - 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM
Location:
2130 H. J. Patterson (LSC)

Can AI help us to understand how the brain understands language?

In investigations of human language processing, computational models can serve a valuable role in fleshing out and testing hypotheses about how this process is accomplished. In this talk I will discuss our recent work with neural network models, which are currently dominant in the natural language processing (NLP) domain of AI. I will talk about use of these models to instantiate and refine theories of language comprehension and related responses like the N400 and P600, and I will talk about experiments examining a particular implemented model and the circumstances under which it does and does not succeed.

Food and ideas bring people together. Our weekly lunch talk series provides students and faculty with the opportunity to present their in-progress work to a supportive, interdisciplinary audience.

Lunch is served starting at 12:15pm.
