Binaural perception in noise and reverberation with bilateral cochlear implant devices

AbstractNormal-hearing listeners are remarkably adept at focusing on one sound source while tuning out numerous competing others. In this talk, I will first focus on recent work investigating how bilateral cochlear implantation has unique problems that interfere with the successful use of this treatment. In particular, I will show how in complex listening settings comprised of noise and reverberation, binaural advantages afforded with bilateral devices can be relatively small, occasionally significant, or often entirely absent. I will then describe future work aimed at the delivery of more robust binaural cues to improve speech perception outcomes in noise.
