Welcome

9:15 am – 10:00 am

Plenary 1: Health Literacy Inspiration

  • Imagining a (Realistic) Digital Health Literacy Future
Monica Spann, Community Health Worker, Prince George's County Health Department, Maryland
Dr. Robert Gold, Professor, Department of Behavioral and Community Health, School of Public Health, University of Maryland

10:15 am – 11:45 am

Break Out 1: Health Literacy (deeper dive)

  • Different Strokes for Different Folks: Some Ins and Outs of Cross Cultural Health Communication
Janet Ohene-Frempong, MS – Institute for Healthcare Advancement

People differ in so many ways – age, race, income level, and educational attainment are but a few in a long list. How do we effectively meet their need for information, service, and care when groups of people are living with such a wide range of what they can do, what they’ve lived through, how they see the world, and how they live their lives. Come explore challenges and recommended approaches to promoting health literacy and health equity among broadly diverse patient and consumer populations.

  • Health Literacy Online: Tips for Simplifying the User Experience
Sandy Williams Hilfiker, MA – CommunicateHealth

This session will delve into the latest evidence-based tips to make digital health communications more appealing, accessible, and usable for all audiences — particularly consumers who don’t have strong health literacy skills. Sandy will walk through best practices for developing effective websites, patient portals, and online tools that foster patient engagement. The upshot: research shows that usability and health literacy best practices have a payoff for all users, not only those with limited literacy skills.

  • Practical Tips to Improve Your Health Materials: Lessons from We ❤ Health Literacy
Stacy Robinson, MPH, MCHES – CommunicateHealth

We have a crush on health literacy. Maybe you do, too. Or maybe you only like it as a friend. And of course it’s possible that you are just learning what health literacy is. Whatever kind of relationship you have, it’s about to get better. Join us for a session chock full of practical health literacy tips and tricks from CommunicateHealth’s weekly We ❤ Health Literacy series.

  • Choosing a Health Literacy Activity for your Organization or Community
Cynthia Baur, PhD – UMD Horowitz Center for Health Literacy

This session will give you the tools and tips to find and choose the health literacy activity that’s the best fit for your organization or community. You will learn how to identify a health literacy activity and set goals, objectives, and outcomes for different types of situations and population groups. You will work on a draft activity plan to take home. The result will be a more effective health literacy focus for your organization or community.
