Research Methodologies

Researchers at Maryland interested in the science of language have the advantage of access to a number of different facilities and methodologies in pursuit of their cutting-edge questions. These can be broadly grouped into the following:

  • Behavioral Studies - including everything from acceptability judgments and self-paced reading to eye-tracking and complex priming and interference paradigms.
  • Engineering and Computation - both in modeling the way humans do things, and seeing how machines can implement similar processes.
  • Electrophysiology - directly tapping into neural activity via ERP (EEG) and MEG.
  • Infant and Child Studies - working with children as young as a few months in a number of different labs, centers and paradigms.
  • Neuroscience - drawing upon our understanding of the underlying biology to connect higher-level theoretical constructs with their real-brain applications.
