Philosophy

The Department consists of 20 faculty members, two staff members, some 50 graduate students, and about 150 undergraduate philosophy majors. The faculty have a wide range of interests throughout contemporary analytic philosophy, with special strengths in a number of areas including Philosophy of Language.

Philosophy of language is increasingly being pursued in ways that are informed by developments in linguistics, and Maryland is at the forefront of this movement. The department already has one joint faculty appointment with Linguistics, with another to be added in the near future. Recent and upcoming seminars in the area included Meanings and Concepts (Pietroski, 2009), The Semantics of Attitude Reports (Eaker and Hacquard, 2008), Naming, Necessity, and Natural Kinds (Eaker, 2008), The Semantics/Pragmatics Distinction (Pietroski, 2006), and Between Meanings and Truth Conditions (Pietroski, 2005).
