Gallaudet University
Gallaudet University is the world leader in education and career development for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The University's Linguistics department is a locus of the linguistic study of American Sign Language (ASL), and serves as a key link in the National NSF-funded Science of Learning Center on Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2).
As part of the Language at Maryland initiative, the university will make course offerings and other collaborative activities open to our colleagues at Gallaudet. We have discussed with the university’s Disability Support Services (DSS) office the process for obtaining ASL interpreting support for Gallaudet students who participate in IGERT activities , and we have also set aside funds to pay for interpreting services at events not covered by DSS.
National Institutes of Health
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) are a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is the country's primary agency for conducting and funding medical research. It is interested in both the pursuit of basic science and the application of science to extend and improve the quality of life in the U.S.
A number of researchers at the NIH have partnered with University of Maryland researchers to work on key clinical and theoretical questions. Additionally, NIH resources (such as an fMRI machine) can sometimes be made available to researchers at the university.
