Research Centers
Center for the Advanced Study of Language
The Center for the Advanced Study of Language (CASL) is tasked with performing research on non-English languages that advances and supports American national security. It does so interdisciplinarily, bringing together individuals from the government, academia and the commercial world to both serve immediate national needs and advance longer-term knowledge and understanding. Located less than a mile from the main UMD campus, it provides opportunities for joint research and collaboration, and indeed many researchers from the language sciences community in Maryland have a joint appointment at the Center.
National Foreign Language Center
The National Foreign Language Center (NFLC) is a research center at the University of Maryland with a mandate to define the current and future language needs of the nation, and help build the ability to satisfy those needs. It does so by providing language-related tools and resources to policy-makers and educators, as well as other individuals in government, academia and the private sector.
Human Language Technology Center of Excellence
The Center for Excellence in Human Language Technology (HLTCOE) is a joint effort between the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University in nearby Baltimore to create advanced technologies for the automated analysis of large amounts of speech, image and document data in multiple languages. The center is primarily housed at Baltimore (about 45 minutes from College Park by car), and provides joint work opportunities to many in UMD's language community, especially in the areas of computational linguistics and natural language processing.
