Reflections on the NRT policy internship

One of the requirements of the NRT fellowship offered through the LSC is to complete an internship related to policy. This summer I interned at the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. In this talk, I'll tell you about my experience and the insights I gained into how policy works and how we as language scientists can get involved.

This summer I spent two months as an intern at Helmholtz Association, one of Germany’s largest research organisations. It’s larger than Max Planck Society, and its 18 research institutes produce a large proportion of the cutting-edge research that Germany is known for. At the same time, Helmholtz Association is highly influential in implementing the German government’s desired outcomes in science, technology and innovation. I worked in the headquarters’s International Affairs team, co-authoring a strategy paper outlining how the Association will implement the German government’s ambitious goals to bring German science and technology to the forefront globally by investing in international research relationships, science diplomacy, and bringing excellent researchers to Germany. On Thursday, I’ll be explaining more about the organisation and its work; what I did; and what I learned from it. I’ll also tell you how I got this internship, and how it will serve me as I hit the job market later this year.
