Advanced second language learners’ perception of lexical tone contrasts
Lexical tones are widely believed to be extremely difficult for adult second language learners to acquire, but this belief is based almost entirely on anecdote. In contrast, a large number of studies examining naive learners of lexical tones suggests that many learners are able to make quick progress in learning to identify tones (add caveats here). This presentation will describe a project that will be conducted this coming summer and uses a variety of tasks (ERPs, LDT, Tone identification) to examine tone perception abilities in advanced second language learners of Mandarin Chinese.
