Title: What’s wrong with the genitive case across L1 and L2 Turkish?

Abstract: In this talk, I will specifically talk about the production and comprehension patterns of the genitive case marker in Turkish by native speakers and highly advanced second language (L2) learners. I will present the findings of a complete study which consisted of an elicited production task and a self-paced reading task, and a proposed study which will consist of two event-related brain potential (ERP) experiments at the word and sentence levels. To this end, the main questions of interest are: What does the genitive tell us about the advance sentence planning and processing in L1 and L2 Turkish? and what makes it vulnerable to production errors (i.e., omission) and processing costs (i.e., longer reaction times, especially in L2 population)? The ERP experiments are expected to contribute to this area of interest with a better understanding of the electrophysiological correlates for the lexical and sentential processes underlying the L1-L2 differences in the processing of the genitive case.

Food and ideas bring people together. Our weekly lunch talk series provides students and faculty with the opportunity to present their in-progress work to a supportive, interdisciplinary audience.

Lunch is served starting at 12:15pm.
