TitleJohn wasn't sure whether the experiments convinced himself: Variability of interference effects in reflexives resolution

Syntactic theory suggests that non-local nouns (e.g. "actress" in "The actress claimed that the directors praised herself") are not valid antecedents for a reflexive pronoun like "herself". In this talk I will discuss two sets of experiments which attempt to check whether this generalization holds in real-time sentence processing. On the one hand, recent studies by Dan Parker and Shayne Sloggett suggest that it does not and that people do access illicit antecedents. On the other hand, I have failed to get robust evidence for such effects in a series of studies, using similar or even identical materials. I will discuss how such variability in results can be interpreted - is it telling us something about pronoun resolution itself, about the way we gather and analyze data, or both?
