Title: "Translating basic science to clinical improvements in cochlear implants"

Abstract:

Cochlear implants (CIs) are bionic sensory prostheses that partially restore hearing to severe-to-profoundly hearing-impaired individuals. A person’s ability to hear with a CI depends on several factors including: (1) biological factors inherent to the implantee, (2) surgical factors related to the medical procedure, (3) device-related factors related to the technology that the implantee is using, and (4) clinical factors related to how the device is programmed by an audiologist. There is presently little guidance to clinical audiologists to individualize CI programming to maximize CI users’ performance, despite the numerous basic science studies that suggest ways to produce large clinical improvements. In this talk, we will discuss how clinicians approach programming CIs, the barriers to individualized programming, and some of our basic science findings that have the potential to improve CI outcomes.
